EditShare Introduces Universal Media File
Industry First: EditShare creates one file for use in both Avid and Final Cut Pro
EditShare has introduced new technology that creates a single media file which can be used in both Avid and Final Cut Pro editing environments. The Universal Media File technology works in conjunction with EditShare's Flow Ingest, the only multi-channel acquisition solution that captures in one format and simultaneously outputs to multiple formats.
The Universal Media File adds a new dimension to shared workflow situations, allowing media to easily be shared and used by editors working on both Avid and Final Cut Pro systems. There's no need to tie up ingest channels or create multiple files of the same media for use on different systems.
"The user has a choice of codecs and you can capture a single file and open that same file in both Avid and Final Cut Pro," explains Andy Liebman, President and Founder of EditShare. "It's really a first and the user doesn't have to do anything complex. In the interface to our ingest server, you just select the universal file for that codec, and it's done. The data remains pristine; none of the file data is compromised. This offers a great advantage and time-savings to any operation that wants the flexibility to work in a mixed editing environment."
Files produced in DV25, DV50, and DVCPRO HD can be ingested as universal media files in EditShare. Additional formats such as IMX will be included in the future.
Complete Collaboration - EditShare Flow The Universal Media File technology is included with EditShare Flow, part of the company's Complete Collaboration product line that provides a unified workflow solution for ingest, logging, and browsing without requiring an Avid or Final Cut Pro workstation.
EditShare Flow Ingest enables media capture in one format with simultaneous outputs to multiple formats including Apple ProRes 422, Avid MXF, and low-res proxy formats. Feature highlights include multi-channel ingest with independent control over each channel, full metadata capture, and edit-while-recording capabilities. Users can automate ingest, control ingest remotely, or initiate it manually.
EditShare Flow Browse simplifies and accelerates media searches within the EditShare storage environment. Users can quickly locate media among hundreds of thousands of clips. EditShare Flow Browse supports proxy viewing outside the nonlinear editing application for optimal viewing on the EditShare Media Space, annotation of metadata forms, and the ability to drag and drop media into an Avid or Final Cut Pro bin. New EditShare Customer Profile: Performance Post
Performance Post is a Los Angeles post production facility with a Hollywood reputation. They do a lot of finishing work for television syndication and have a fast-growing business in "repurposing" films for television and new media.
The repurposed projects need reformatting, re-editing, time alteration and other work to meet the editorial and technical constraints of the various distribution media. With volume approaching a thousand titles a year, Performance Post owner Fausto Sanchez needed to find a better way to maximize his resources.
Prior to the EditShare installation, Performance Post had a stable of six Avid systems - each with their own storage. Sanchez explained, "The film-to-TV workflow involves some highly technical work that can only be performed in specially-equipped studios. Not every studio has all the necessary equipment, so having storage limited to one room was extremely inefficient. It was a nightmare trying to schedule and juggle all the jobs." Sanchez needed a centralized storage system that would allow true editing collaboration in order to meet the delivery deadlines of the increasing number of projects.
Sanchez evaluated several systems before selecting an EditShare 5RU unit with 8TB of storage. EditShare systems are Networked Attached Storage (NAS) devices that are highly optimized for video editing - both in their hardware and their software. Sanchez was particularly impressed by the fact that unlike many SANs, which require expensive Fibre Channel cards and switches, all EditShare systems use a standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet network for connectivity. Anticipating increased workloads involving high bandwidth, uncompressed HD streams, Sanchez implemented EditShare's 10 Gigabit Ethernet network option for his system. Speed and collaboration were his primary considerations. EditShare allows file level sharing so that all connected workstations can capture, access and share in real-time a common pool of media files. Regardless of application or platform, source material, work in progress and finished packages are shared and instantly available to all users on the EditShare network
EditShare's ability to seamlessly work with various generations of Avid products was a key reason for selecting the system. Sanchez says, "It's effortless - you log on, select and mount your project, and just move on. It doesn't get in your way at all. And with EditShare, I have the ability to keep the older systems like the Media Composers running right along side my newer HD systems." New Videography Article on EditShare
"EditShare is certainly marketing in a crowded and competitive space, but they offer the advantage of understanding the customer's production needs. These are robust systems offering comparable performance to any other unit out there, but the project sharing capabilities are unique. No other company offers Final Cut Pro project sharing as well as an Avid sharing solution. Furthermore, both Avid and FCP systems can co-exist in one ecosystem--a big boon for post houses that have to supply both solutions. EditShare is the collaborative workflow solution many editors will want when they expand their facility."

EditShare Field Customer Profile: Australian Football Grand Final
Australia's largest post facility - Cutting Edge - has put EditShare Field through its paces on the Australian Football League's (AFL) Grand Final series aired in high definition (HD) on Network TEN.
The AFL Grand Final is Australia's version of the NFL's Super Bowl and it is consistently Australia's most-watched television show every year. This year's match saw the Geelong Cats overtake the Port Adelaide Power by 119 points. High scoring isn't the only thing unique about "Aussie Rules" football. It's fast-paced and extremely physical - tactics focus on kicking and tackling; in-the-air pass throws aren't allowed. The high energy play on the oversized oval field with four goalposts at each end presents a challenge for broadcast coverage.
Specializing in on-location assignments, the Outdoor Broadcast (OB) unit of Cutting Edge has the country's largest fleet of production equipped vans packed with the latest HD technology. For the AFL Grand Final, Cutting Edge needed a rugged storage solution that would support a high-definition, quick-turn around, collaborative scenario in a temporary location.
A 3TB EditShare Field unit was the answer. EditShare Field is the world's first portable shared storage solution. The unit is compact and ruggedized, perfect for field work. Like all EditShare media sharing and storage products, EditShare Field supports a wide range of editing and compositing applications. EditShare Field stores audio and video files in a central networked location and connects to laptops and desktops over standard Gigabit Ethernet. EditShare Field supports all SD and compressed HD resolutions (including DNxHD).

New EditShare Customer Profile: Merit/Andrew
Business was growing for Merit Andrew, a boutique film production company based in Orange County, California. The company's four edit bays were humming with work ranging from national spots and music videos to high-end industrial films. The firm has seven full time employees, but multiple crews of up to a hundred professionals are often in the field.
Executive Producer Curt Fleming says the company was feeling some real pain moving around media, wasting more than two hours each day just to get media from room to room. An entire production day per week was spent managing media manually. To get back this wasted time, Merit Andrew needed to automate and streamline their workflow with a shared storage solution.
Fleming followed strict criteria as he considered every available system. "We're not willy-nilly with our funds and we do our homework before we invest in anything. It has to pan out financially," he explained. The solution had to support Avid as well as other editing and compositing systems. He wanted an open, heterogeneous environment with protected storage at an affordable price point. Fleming says, "Key Code Media helped us evaluate multiple solutions for our workflow, outlining the positives and workflow constraints and their impact to us. Once all the questions were answered, EditShare was a no-brainer."

EditShare Ships Apple Final Cut Pro Project Sharing, iSCSI Support, and a New Archiving Option
EditShare Version 5.0 is now shipping with new, much-anticipated workflow capabilities: Project Sharing for Apple Final Cut Pro, iSCSI support, and a brand new Archiving option for cost-effective file backup.
Project Sharing for Apple Final Cut Pro Editors The new EditShare Project Sharing feature for Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP) allows FCP editors to instantly see, copy, or revise the work of colleagues with the assurance that a bin, sequence, or project will never be accidentally deleted or overwritten. The new EditShare Project Sharing feature for FCP editors is seamless, eliminating time-consuming exporting and importing of XML files and duplication of FCP project files. This same outstanding capability was made available to Avid editors in 2006. To date, EditShare is the only developer to offer project sharing for both Avid and Apple editors.
Support for iSCSI New iSCSI support lets customers simultaneously enjoy the advantages of a SAN and a NAS. Users may enjoy the ease, simplicity, and power of a file-level sharing NAS while benefitting from the block-level, SAN-type connectivity required for applications such as Digidesign Pro Tools and Avid DS Nitris.
EditShare Archive EditShare Archive is a new option that can be added to an EditShare for cost-effective file backup. Archive is compatible with EditShare Media Spaces. If there is a problem with an EditShare - if it is stolen or damaged - EditShare Archive can be brought up as an EditShare server in a matter of minutes. Archive is integrated with EditShare for automating archiving and backup.
About Version 5.0 Already deployed by some of the largest post facilities and broadcasters around the world - including Australia's Cutting Edge and ION Media Networks in the U.S. - the new EditShare release adds significant enhancements to its core capabilities. Version 5.0 includes "plug and play" packaging for easy deployment, a streamlined file management structure to organize media files with greater speed and ease, and daily "health" reports on server activity. Improved Avid Project Sharing enables users to move nested folders and bins without having to worry about permissions. New EditShare Customer Profile: Undbitte Entertainment
Undbitte Entertainment is one of the busiest post-production facilities in Germany. Its list of prime-time series includes popular hits such as Big Brother, Quiz Taxi, and the new show Poker Bus. Georg von Kreisner, Technical Director for Post Production, notes that each of the shows has unique technical demands, but all produce huge volumes of material with short turn-around schedules.
Undbitte Entertainment has relied on EditShare to streamline their production workflows over the past two years. Von Kreisner says EditShare's unique Avid Project Sharing which allows multiple editors to simultaneously edit show content is a dramatic time-saver. This is especially important to meet the short turn-arounds that are an inherent part of reality television...

EditShare Scores C&T Award for 'Best Tapeless Digital Workflow'
EditShare took home the C&T 2007 for Best Tapeless Digital Workflow for a project/facility roll out. Submitted in conjunction with Cutting Edge, Australia's largest privately owned post facility, EditShare won the coveted C&T Award for the widely popular reality TV show "Big Brother".
About the EditShare / Cutting Edge Project Cutting Edge Managing Director Michael Burton proposed a tapeless workflow as a means to improve turnaround times for fast paced reality TV shows such as Big Brother. The transition to a tapeless workflow solved several critical issues and reduced overall costs of the operation. No longer did the team have to double-handle media. With EditShare, editors have instant access to high resolution source material via Gigabit Ethernet networks 24 hours a day.
The Cutting Edge / EditShare System Overview
* Integration of a Content Management System that includes live and proxy video generation, simple searching, and basic timeline editing
* Avid ALE generation and transfer to editing suites
* Control of a EVS disk capture system, capturing 6 live feeds continually
* Automatic transfer of 6 video streams to a 30TB EditShare system
The system was successfully used 24 hours a day for the three month Australian Big Brother '07 series. The EditShare workflow comprised of 10 Adrenaline suites and 10 proxy editing suites editing 2:1 realtime off the EditShare server.

New EditShare Customer Profile: West Virginia University
The Television Production Department at WVU is a busy operation, turning out more than 50+ "Mountainer Magazine" and "Mountaineer Jammin" programs for the Mountaineer Network which is syndicated and carried by several TV stations in the region. These and a full schedule of live Mountaineer Network game coverage of football, basketball, and other sports and campus activities keep the WVU team at full tilt. With the workload growing, Manager of Communications Engineering Fred Marstiller needed to streamline the operation and move towards an integrated file-based workflow to keep up with demand.
With each of the five Avid edit suites a stand-alone unit, there was no way to share material; valuable time was wasted digitizing tapes and waiting for materials. That all changed when WVU installed an EditShare system loaded with 36TB of storage. Unlike other shared storage systems, the Network Attached Storage (NAS) EditShare solution is uniquely optimized for postproduction workflows, offering software tools such as Avid project sharing that maximize collaboration for multi-user environments such as WVU.

DMN Podcast: EditShare's Andy Liebman on Production Workflow
Smaller studios can now have what major studios have long enjoyed
"If you have ever worked on a project that had multiple editors on it you know the frustration that comes with having to sit and wait until one person was done with the media you needed. You waited and then even more frustrating or time consuming had to go and load the media onto a portable drive for your perusal or workflow. Although this worked for most it is about to become extinct.
What only the big boys at the studios had can now be afforded by smaller independent studios. Welcome to EditShare.
I had the opportunity to meet with EditShare President Andy Liebman last week for dinner. I was so blown away by what EditShare was able to do to the production workflow that I twisted Andy's arm to be on the show. His need for a better workflow prompted him to create EditShare.
The story is both inspiring and informative."

EditShare has announced the addition of Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP) Project Sharing capabilities to the EditShare product family. Deployed first for Avid systems and editors, the widely popular EditShare Project Sharing technology provides tremendous collaborative workflow benefits by enabling multiple editors to work on the same project simultaneously. EditShare is the only collaborative workflow and shared storage solution to offer project sharing for Apple FCP and Avid editing systems.
"EditShare is more than shared storage - it is workflow and collaboration tools for creative teams," comments Andy Liebman, founder and president, EditShare. Innovative features such as Final Cut Pro and Avid Project Sharing are perfect examples of unique benefits the EditShare workflow offers. They reinforce our commitment in delivering the very best collaborative solutions for creative environments."
For the first time, Apple FCP editors can enjoy the same tremendous collaborative workflow benefits that previously were only available to Avid editors. The new EditShare Apple FCP Project Sharing feature allows multiple Apple FCP editors to simultaneously open up and work from the same projects. EditShare Project Sharing is seamless, eliminating time consuming exporting and importing of XML files and duplication of FCP project files. As with all EditShare systems, the rights management and rules driven architecture allow administrators to pre-define user access and prevent overwrites, further enhancing the overall exchange of media and creative workflow across all post environments.
* An assistant editor can digitize clips, organize into subclips while the senior editor simultaneously reviews the material;
* Journalists can assemble stories and the journalist can review the packages in progress - extracting clips and sound bytes to create the promo;
* Editors working on a reality show can share the same "master clips" and "subclips" without duplicating media files or projects. The executive producer can preview a sequence at his desk while editing of the sequence continues.
The EditShare Project Sharing functionality for Apple FCP will ship as part of the EditShare 5.0 standard feature set in Q3 2007.
